Tongue Tie

Tongue Tie (Ankyloglossia)

Tongue Tie (Ankyloglossia) is a congenital condition where the lingual frenulum – the band of tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth – is unusually short, thick, or tight. This restricts tongue movement and can affect feeding, speech, and oral hygiene.

Our ENT specialist evaluates and treats tongue tie in infants, children, and adults with a simple and effective procedure.

What is Tongue Tie?

In tongue tie, the frenulum is too short or tight, limiting the tongue's range of motion. This can interfere with breastfeeding in newborns, cause speech difficulties in children, and affect oral hygiene and dental health in adults.

Symptoms

  • Difficulty breastfeeding (poor latch, poor weight gain)
  • Speech difficulties (lisping, difficulty with certain sounds)
  • Difficulty sticking out the tongue or touching the roof of the mouth
  • Notched or heart-shaped tongue tip
  • Dental spacing issues

Treatment

  • Frenotomy – simple snipping of the frenulum (infants)
  • Frenuloplasty – surgical release with sutures (older children/adults)
  • Laser frenectomy – precise and minimally invasive
  • Speech therapy post-procedure if needed

Benefits

  • Improved breastfeeding and feeding
  • Better speech and articulation
  • Improved oral hygiene
  • Quick procedure with fast recovery
