Dix Hallpike Test
The Dix-Hallpike Test is a standard clinical diagnostic manoeuvre used to identify Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), the most common cause of vertigo. It helps the ENT specialist determine which ear and which semicircular canal is affected by displaced calcium crystals (otoconia).

What is the Dix-Hallpike Test?
The Dix-Hallpike Test involves a series of controlled head and body position changes performed by the specialist while observing the patient's eye movements (nystagmus) and symptoms. A positive result — triggering brief vertigo and characteristic nystagmus — confirms BPPV of the posterior semicircular canal.
When is it Recommended?

How is the Test Performed?
The patient is seated upright on the examination table. The specialist turns the patient's head 45 degrees to one side and then quickly lowers the patient to a lying position with the head hanging slightly below the table edge. The specialist observes for nystagmus and asks about vertigo symptoms. The test is then repeated on the other side.
The entire procedure takes only a few minutes and is performed in the clinic without any special equipment.
