Styloid Process Excision
Styloid Process Excision is a surgical procedure to shorten or remove an elongated styloid process — a slender bony projection from the base of the skull — that causes Eagle's Syndrome. Eagle's Syndrome results in persistent throat pain, neck pain, difficulty swallowing, and a sensation of a foreign body in the throat.
Surgical excision provides definitive relief from the chronic pain and discomfort associated with an elongated styloid process.
What is Eagle's Syndrome?
Eagle's Syndrome occurs when the styloid process is abnormally long (greater than 3 cm) or when the stylohyoid ligament becomes calcified. This can compress or irritate nearby nerves and blood vessels, causing a range of symptoms in the throat, neck, and face. It is often misdiagnosed due to its varied and non-specific presentation.
Symptoms of an Elongated Styloid Process
- Persistent throat pain or soreness
- Sensation of a foreign body or lump in the throat
- Difficulty or pain when swallowing
- Neck and jaw pain
- Ear pain or facial pain
- Headaches
- Pain when turning the head
Procedure Overview
Styloid Process Excision can be performed via an intraoral (through the mouth) or external cervical (through a neck incision) approach, depending on the extent of elongation and the surgeon's assessment. Under general anaesthesia, the elongated portion of the styloid process is carefully shortened or removed, relieving pressure on surrounding structures.
Most patients experience significant symptom relief following surgery, with recovery typically taking two to four weeks.
